Many years after the Warren Commission report, Rep. “As Chapter 1 made clear, one of the two fiendish stratagems used by the Power Control Group to cover-up the truth and to fool the people was the use of various intelligence techniques and weapons. The use of such techniques in assassination and murder completely conceals the real killer’s presence or the real cause of death. From the moment the crime occurs the public is led to believe that there is either one lone madman assassin or that the death was accidental, due to natural causes, or committed by natural enemies of the victim. Some of the techniques are so unique that they are nearly impossible for the average American to believe.

The intelligence forces of the United States as well as those of other countries have out-Bonded James Bond. The development of sophisticated murder methods and the control of humans for warfare and spying in other countries came home to the United States, effectively used by the Power Control Group. Penn Jones, Jr. published a list of “mysterious deaths” in his series of four volumes, Forgive My Grief.[1] Sylvia Meagher published facts about the first eighteen witnesses at Dealey Plaza murdered through the use of these techniques in the book, Accessories After the Fact.[2] Very few people other than researchers pay any attention. Two movies with somewhat wider circulation, Executive Action and The Parallax View, covered the techniques fairly well, but they were considered to be fiction by most viewers. So the PCG goes on murdering where and when it is necessary, and it covers up the murders where necessary”.

Richard E. Sprague is a pioneer in the field of electronic computers and a leading American authority on Electronic Funds Transfer Systems (EFTS). Receiving his BSEE degreee from Purdue University in 1942, his computing career began when he was employed as an engineer for the computer group at Northrup Aircraft. He co-founded the Computer Research Corporation of Hawthorne, California in 1950, and by 1953, serving as Vice President of Sales, the company had sold more computers than any competitor. In 1960, he became the Director of Computer Systems Consulting for Touche, Ross, Bailey, and Smart. He became a partner in that company in 1963, and started its Advanced Business Systems Department in 1964 where he stayed until 1968. In 1968 he established Sprague Research and Consulting for Computer Information Systems Consultation. He is currently also Consultant to the President’s Commission on EFTS and full time consultant to Battelle Memorial Institute of Frankfurt, Germany.

In 1966, Mr. Sprague commenced an intensive program of research into the photographic evidence associated with the assassination of John Kennedy. He served a year as photographic expert advisor in the investigations conducted by New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison and had amassed and analyzed a majority of the known evidence on film by 1968 when he co-founded the Committee to Investigate Assassinations. He served with CTIA as an active researcher, board member and Secretary from 1968 to 1974.

Following numerous radio and television appearances and extensive lecture tours of the United States and Canada (where slides and films were used to demonstrate the basic evidence of conspiracy), he began, in 1974, working toward a Congressional investigation of all four major political assassinations and the cover-ups and links among these interrelated events. He was an advisor to Representative Henry B. Gonzales (D-Texas) on House Resolution 203 which proposed the appointment of a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of JFK, RFK, Martin Luther King and the attempt upon the life of Presidential Candidate George Wallace. He served as a consultant to Richard A. Sprague and G. Robert Blakey, the first and second General Counsels of the House Select Committee on Assassinations and served through the end of the Committee’s existence.

He is author of Electronic Business Systems (Ronald Press) 1962, Information Utilities (Prentice Hall) 1969, and a celebrated series of articles which appeared in Computers & Automation Magazine beginning in 1970. He is also co-author with Dick Russell of In Search of the Assassins which is scheduled for publication by the Dial Press in 1977.

Wikipedia is incomplete and erroneous on the topic of JFK Witness Deaths. This post will expose its errors of omission and commission. Note that I contacted Wikipedia about a year ago to have a summary of my JFK witness death probability analysis included in the Witness Deaths section. The moderator refused, claiming my analysis was not a published document. Well, they no longer can use that excuse. My work has been cited in “Hit List” by Richard Belzer and David Wayne and by Jim Marrs in his updated version of the classic “Crossfire”. Along with Jim Garrison’s “On the Trail of the Assassins”, “Crossfire” was the basis for Oliver Stone’s “JFK”.

Before discussing the witness deaths, consider this example of glaring misinformation in the Wikipedia section: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_House_Select_Committee_on_Assassinations#Criticisms_and_further_research:
“A majority of witnesses who testified on the source of the shots said they came from the direction of the Depository. However, many witnesses thought the shots came from the direction of the Knoll. Only five witnesses, from a total of over one hundred, thought the shots came from two directions simultaneously”.

On the contrary, the majority of witnesses said the shots came from the Grassy Knoll! If Wikipedia can get this wrong, why believe any of its sections on the JFK Assassination? It appears that Wikipedia’s editor has a bias, to put it mildly.

What follows is the result of a survey of the 121 witnesses to the assassination of President Kennedy whose statements are registered in the twenty-six volumes appended to the Warren Report. On the question of where the shots that killed the President came from, 38 could give no clear opinion and 32 thought they came from the Texas School Book Depository Building (TSBDB). Fifty-one (51) held the shots sounded as if the came from west of the Depository, the area of the grassy knoll on Elm Street, the area directly on the right of the President’s car when the bullets struck.

Note: John McAdams’ survey is the one quoted by Wikipedia. It is the only one of four in which a majority (61%) of Dealey Plaza eyewitnesses claimed that the Texas School Book Depository was the source of the shots. Allegations of mysterious or suspicious deaths of witnesses connected with the Kennedy assassination originated with Penn Jones, Jr. and were brought to national attention by the 1973 film Executive Action. Jim Marrs later presented a list of 103 people he believed died “convenient deaths” under suspect circumstances. He noted that the deaths were grouped around investigations conducted by the Warren Commission, New Orleans D.A. Jim Garrison, the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the House Select Committee on Assassinations. Marrs pointed out that “these deaths certainly would have been convenient for anyone not wishing the truth of the JFK assassination to become public.”

Vincent Bugliosi has described the death of journalist Dorothy Kilgallen—who claimed she was granted a private interview with Jack Ruby—as “perhaps the most prominent mysterious death” cited by assassination researchers. According to author Jerome Kroth, Mafia figures Sam Giancana, John Roselli, Carlos Prio, Jimmy Hoffa, Charles Nicoletti, Leo Moceri, Richard Cain,Salvatore Granello, and Dave Yaras were likely murdered to prevent them from revealing their knowledge. According to author Matthew Smith, others with some tie to the case who have died suspicious deaths include Lee Bowers, Gary Underhill, William Sullivan, David Ferrie, Clay Shaw, George de Mohrenschildt, four showgirls who worked for Jack Ruby, and Ruby himself.

The House Select Committee on Assassinations investigated another alleged “mysterious death”—that of Rose Cheramie. The Committee reported that Louisiana State Police Lieutenant Francis Fruge traveled to Eunice, Louisiana on November 20, 1963 – two days before the assassination — to pick up Rose Cherami, who had sustained minor injuries after she was hit by a car. Fruge drove Cherami to the hospital and said that on the way there, she “…related to [him] that she was coming from Florida to Dallas with two men who were Italians or resembled Italians.” Fruge asked her what she planned to do in Dallas, to which she replied: “…number one, pick up some money, pick up [my] baby, and … kill Kennedy”. Cherami was admitted and treated at State Hospital in Jackson, Louisiana for alcohol and heroin addiction. State Hospital physician, Dr. Victor Weiss later told a House Select Committee investigator that on November 25—three days after the assassination—one of his fellow physicians told him “…that the patient, Rose Cherami, stated before the assassination that President Kennedy was going to be killed.” Dr. Weiss further reported that Cherami told him after the assassination that she had worked for Jack Ruby and that her knowledge of the assassination originated from “word in the underworld.”After the assassination, Lt. Fruge contacted Dallas Police Captain Will Fritz regarding what he had learned from Cherami, but Captain Fritz told him he “wasn’t interested”. Cherami was found dead by a highway near Big Sandy, Texas on September 4, 1965; she had been run over by a car.

Another “suspicious death” cited by Jim Marrs was that of Joseph Milteer, director of the Dixie Klan of Georgia. Milteer was secretly tape-recorded thirteen days before the assassination telling Miami police informant William Somersett that the murder of Kennedy was “in the working.” Milteer died in 1974 when a heater exploded in his house. The House Select Committee on Assassinations reported in 1979 that Milteer’s information on the threat to the President “was furnished [to] the agents making the advance arrangements before the visit of the President” to Miami, but that “the Milteer threat was ignored by Secret Service personnel in planning the trip to Dallas.” Robert Bouck, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Secret Service’s Protective Research Section, “…testified to the committee that threat information was transmitted from one region of the country to another if there was specific evidence it was relevant to the receiving region.”

The House Select Committee on Assassinations investigated the allegation “that a statistically improbable number of individuals with some direct or peripheral association with the Kennedy assassination died as a result of that assassination, thereby raising the specter of conspiracy”. The committee’s chief of research testified: “Our final conclusion on the issue is that the available evidence does not establish anything about the nature of these deaths which would indicate that the deaths were in some manner, either direct or peripheral, caused by the assassination of President Kennedy or by any aspect of the subsequent investigation.”

Author Gerald Posner points out that Marrs’ list was taken from the group of about 10,000 people connected even in the most tenuous way to the assassination, one of the multiple official investigations, or the independent research of conspiracy theorists. He notes that it would be surprising if a hundred people out of ten thousand did not die in “unnatural ways” and points out over half of the people on Marrs’ list did not in fact die mysteriously, but of natural causes, such as Secret Service agent Roy Kellerman, who died of heart failure at age 69 in 1984, long after the Kennedy assassination, but is on Marrs’ list as someone whose cause of death is “unknown”. Posner also points out that many prominent witnesses and conspiracy researchers continue to live long lives and have not made it onto the mysterious death list.

My comments:
Posner is wrong. Approximately 70% of the convenient deaths were unnatural (homicide, accident, suicide, unknown).

Seven top FBI officials died within a 6 month period just before their scheduled testimony at HSCA. Neither Posner, Bugliosi or the HSCA statistician mention that fact. Why not?

Where is Posner’s proof that Marrs’ 103 witnesses were based on a universe of 10,000? Even if there were 10,000, the probability of 50 homicides from 1964-78 is 1.3E-15 (1 in 750 billion). The probability of 100 homicides (more likely) is 5.4E-54 (less than 1 in a million trillion trillion trillion trillion).

Posner never calculated the probabilities. But he could have tried to contact the actuary engaged by the London Sunday Times who determined 100,000 trillion to one odds against 18 material witnesses dying within three years of the assassination. Unfortunately, Posner would have been out of luck; no one at the Times recalled the actuary’ name in response to the HSCA in 1977. If you believe that, there is a bridge in Brooklyn…

Neither the HSCA statistician, Posner or Bugliosi considered that the issue is not how many witnesses died.The relevant question is: how many died unnaturally among the finite group of witnesses who were called or sought to testify in four investigations? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjAk1JUWDMyRdDFSU3NVd29xWWNyekd2X1ZJYllKTnc#gid=55.

Approximately 1100 witnesses were called to testify in four investigations from 1964-78. Sixty-seven (67) are included among the 126 in the JFK Calc spreadsheet database. Of the 67, at least 39 were unnatural deaths of which 28 were homicides. The probability of 39 unnatural deaths is E-27 or 1 in 200 trillion trillion.

Approximately 1400+ material witnesses related to the JFK Assassination are referenced in “Who’s Who in the JFK Assassination” by Michael Benson. In JFK Calc, there are 120 JFK-related suspicious deaths. The best estimate is that 99 were unnatural (83 homicides, 8 accidents, 4 suicides and 4 unknown). Officially, 78 were unnatural. But the HSCA noted just 21 deaths. http://www.cassiopaea.org/cass/jfkdeaths.htm

The probability of at least 30 unnatural deaths is ZERO based on average (unweighted) U.S. mortality rates. For the JFK-witness group, the probability is ZERO of at least 12 deaths (due to the lower average mortality rate). But there were at least 97 unnatural deaths. The probability is E-40 based on national unnatural mortality rates. The correct probability based on JFK-weighted rates is E-112.

Of the 552 witnesses who testified at the Warren Commission in 1964, at least 30 died suspiciously from 1964-78 (20 unnaturally). The probability is E-18. Of the 20 unnatural deaths, 17 were homicides. Only 7 unnatural deaths would normally be expected in the 15 year period.

The average homicide rate for 1964-78 was 0.000084. The probability that in 1964-78 there would be 81 homicides among 1400 material witnesses is E-102.

Even if there were 25,000 FBI interviews, how many were material witnesses? Probably no more than 1500. The probability of 81 homicides among 25,000 from 1964-78 is 1 in 6 trillion. Only 31 homicides would normally be expected over a 15 year period.

The REELZ documentary The Smoking Gun is based on Mortal Error, a propaganda screed that is easily exposed mathematically. REELZ’s promotion will backfire and be seen as a desperate “Hail Mary” attempt to salvage the Warren Commission myth that Oswald was shooting from the 6th floor of the Texas School Book Depository and claim that he wasn’t the only shooter. This pathetic documentary claims that Secret Service agent George Hickey accidentally shot JFK from behind.

This travesty is a transparently blatant attempt to kill five birds with one stone to 1) maintain the myth of no conspiracy, 2) absolve the Secret Service, 3) maintain the myth that Oswald was shooting simultaneously, 4) show that the discredited Single Bullet Theory was no longer operative or a necessary condition to explain all the shots. But the real goal was 5) to add another “conspiracy theory” into the mix in order to marginalize scientific expert researchers who have developed overwhelming FACTUAL ballistic, acoustic, eyewitness and medical evidence that refutes the Single Bullet Theory.

Of course REELZ also failed to mention the mathematical proof of a conspiracy based on the astounding number of “convenient” witness deaths occurring in critical periods of four JFK investigations from 1964-78.

This sleight of hand is so obvious, it is transparent to anyone with the intelligence of a fly. It will not achieve its objective of a “limited hangout” in order to perpetuate the BIG LIE. It just shows the desperation of the Warren Commission apologists and the corporate media’s shameless unceasing 50-year agenda to cover-up the true facts of the assassination.

Calculating the odds of misfiring and killing JFK is difficult, but let’s make a plausible attempt. Assume the odds are one in a million that the agent’s gun would misfire (i.e. it is possible but extremely unlikely). Assume the Secret Service shooter was 60 feet behind JFK. The objective is to calculate the odds that an accidental misfire would hit JFK in the head. It is actually a simple geometry problem if we make certain assumptions as to the area of possible bullet trajectories.

We will assume a half-circle misfiring perimeter. The radius (distance from the shooter to JFK) is 60 feet. Therefore, the length of the half circle is L = PI*R = 3.14*60*12 = 2260 inches. Let’s assume a vertical height H of 100 inches. Then the total area of possible misfire is A = L*H = 226,000 square inches. The probability of the stray bullet hitting a one inch square target is 1 in 226,000. But there is a one in a million chance of an accidental misfire. Therefore a conservative gross estimate of the probability P of an accidentally misfired bullet hitting JFK is P = 1/226,000 * 1/1,000,000 or 1 in 226 billion.

But this cursory mathematical exercise is unnecessary. The Parkland doctors all stated that the shots came from the front.

Before Burt Lancaster and Robert Ryan decided to make Executive Action in 1973, they needed to believe in a conspiracy. They did so by analyzing the evidence. THEY WERE NOT INTIMIDATED. The Single Bullet Theory
The Warren Commission claimed that the throat wound was an exit wound. A single bullet hit Kennedy in the back, exited the front of his neck, and then changed direction to hit Governor John Connally (sitting in front of Kennedy) in the back, wrist and leg. WC member Rep. Gerald Ford (R-MI) changed the position of JFK’s back wound to conform to the single-bullet theory.

In July 1997, pages from the original draft of the Warren Report were released, describing the path of the famous single—or magic—bullet. The memo stated: “A bullet had entered his back at a point slightly above the shoulder to the right of the spine.” In pen, Ford changed the report to read, “A bullet had entered the back of his neck at a point slightly to the right of the spine,” thus making the single-bullet theory plausible. http://www.jfklancer.com/Ford-Rankin.html

The Gaping Exit Wound
Parkland surgeon, Robert McClelland, MD. described JFK’s skull exit wound in a drawing first published in the book, “Six Seconds in Dallas” by Josiah Thompson. The image, reprinted from “High Treason” by authors Robert Groden and Harrison Livingstone, includes a letter from Parkland professor Paul Peters, MD, corroborating the location Dr. McClelland gave for JFK’s gaping skull wound. The Small Throat Wound
The throat wound was made by the first of the two (or possibly more) bullets that struck Kennedy. It was not the fatal wound. The physicians who performed the autopsy did not see this wound in its original state, because it was obliterated by one of the Parkland doctors, Dr. Malcolm Perry, when he made a surgical incision over it in order to perform a tracheotomy. Therefore, only the doctors and nurses at Parkland hospital had a view of this wound in its original state. On November 22, 1963, millions of Americans heard radio and TV networks report that Dr. Malcolm Perry, a Dallas Physician who was with the President in the emergency room when he died, said there was a bullet entrance wound situated on the front of Kennedy’s neck. He said “there was an entrance wound below the Adam’s apple.”

Tom Wicker with the New York Times: Dr. Malcolm Perry, an attending surgeon, and Dr. Kemp Clark, chief of neurosurgery at Parkland Hospital, gave more details. Mr. Kennedy was hit by a bullet in the throat, just below the Adam’s apple, they said. This wound had the appearance of a bullet’s entry…

Dallas News reporter John Geddie: Dr. Perry said, “in the lower portion of Kennedy’s neck, right in the front, there was a small puncture”.

Dr. Ronald Jones in his Warren Commission deposition explained why the doctors considered the throat wound to be an entrance wound: “The hole was very small and relatively clean-cut as you would see in a bullet that is entering rather than exiting from a patient”.

Dr. Paul Peters testified at the Warren Commission Hearings: “We saw the wound of entry in the throat and noted the large occipital wound, and it is a known fact that high velocity missiles often have a small wound of entrance and a large wound of exit…”

Dr. Charles Baxter noted that such a wound (to have been an exit wound) would be “unusual… ordinarily there would have been a rather large wound of exit.”

Dr. Charles Carrico: On the afternoon of November 22, Dr. Carrico described the throat wound in his medical report as “a small penetrating wound of the ant. (front) neck in the lower 1/3”.

Nurse Margaret Henchliffe testified to the Warren Commission: “It was just a little hole in the middle of his neck… about as big around as the end of my little finger… that looked like an entrance bullet hole…”

Dr. Robert McClelland told the Post-Dispatch: “It certainly did look like an entrance wound.” He explained that a bullet from a low velocity rifle, like the one thought to have been used, characteristically makes a small entrance wound, sets up shock waves inside the body, and tears a big opening when it passes out the other side.

Dr. McClelland conceded that it was possible that the throat wound marked the exit of a bullet fired into the back of the President’s neck… “but we are familiar with bullet wounds,” he said. “We see them every day – sometimes several a day. This did appear to be an entrance wound.”

McClelland noted in the same interview, having been informed that Lee Harvey Oswald had shot the President from behind: “We postulated that if it was a wound of entry, as we thought it was… he would have to have been looking almost completely to the rear”.

McClelland testified to the Warren Commission: “At the moment… it was our impression before we had any other information… that this was one bullet, that perhaps had entered through the front of the neck and then in some peculiar fashion which we really had… to strain to explain to ourselves, had coursed up the front of the vertebra and into the base of the skull and out the rear of the skull”.

Dr. Robert Shaw said that the doctors were “a little baffled” by the throat wound:“The assassin was behind him, yet the bullet entered at the front of his neck. Mr. Kennedy must have turned to his left to talk to Mrs. Kennedy or to wave to someone”.

“Doctor, describe the entrance wound. You think from the front in the throat?”
DR. PERRY — “The wound appeared to be an entrance wound in the front of the throat; yes, that is correct. The exit wound, I don’t know. It could have been the head or there could have been a second wound of the head. There was not time to determine this at the particular instant.”

Conspiracy Mathematical Proof
An actuary engaged by the London Sunday Times calculated 100,000 trillion to one odds against 18 material witness dying within three years of the assassination (thirteen died unnaturally by homicide, accident and suicide, 3 by heart attacks, 2 by natural causes). The reference Who’s Who in the JFK Assassination contains summaries of 1400+ material witnesses. Based on the national average total mortality rate (0.010193), approximately 214 would be expected to die in the 15 years from 1964-78. Given the national average unnatural mortality rate (0.000808), only 17 unnatural deaths would be expected, but there were at least 96. The probability of 96 unnatural deaths is E-39 (ZERO). It’s a ridiculous E-111 using the JFK-weighted witness rate (0.000127).

These deaths, categorized as homicides in the database, were officially ruled as suicides (Stockdale, Ferrie, Pitzer, De Morenshildt, Craig, Underhill, Surrey); sudden cancers (Ruby, Martin, Artime, Dyer); illnesses (Smith, Carter); accident (Sherman).

These deaths were officially ruled as accidents (Sullivan, Sherman, Kilgallen, Bowers); heart attacks (Regis Kennedy, Howard) There were many others. But they may very well have been homicides.

If any of the official “accidents”, “suicides” and “heart attacks” were actually homicides, the probabilities would be lower still. It is important to note that the 1964-78 average homicide rate was much lower than accidental deaths and suicides, therefore comparing unnatural deaths to the expected number is not nearly as dramatic as comparing homicides. Nationally, homicides comprised 10% of unnatural deaths. Among the 78 official unnatural deaths, there were 35 (48%) homicides. But in JFK Calc,homicides were 83% of 96 unnatural deaths. If the analysis were based on homicides, the mathematical proof would be simpler and more powerful.

In prior JFK witness death analyses, the focus has been on unnatural deaths (homicides, accidents, suicides and unknown causes). This post will examine the likelihood that there were many more homicides than officially reported in the period from 1964-78. The analysis assumes a base case of 1400+ JFK-related witnesses noted in “Who’s Who in the JFK Assassination”.

Unnatural Deaths
Some have questioned the assumption that there were more homicides than officially reported. The 1964-78 national average annual homicide rate was 0.000084 (or 8 per 100,000). Among an estimated 1400+ JFK-related witnesses, only two (1400*15*.000084) homicides would normally have been expected in the 15 year period.

Among the 122 suspicious witness deaths from 1964-78 in JFK Calc, 78 were officially ruled unnatural (34 homicides, 16 suicides, 24 accidents, 4 unknown). The other 44 deaths were natural (25 heart attacks, 6 cancers, 13 other). But mortality rates for each cause of death buttress the suspicion that many accidents, suicides and natural deaths were homicides.

There was a ZERO probability of at least 30 unnatural deaths in 1964-78 based on unweighted U.S. unnatural mortality rates. But there were 78 officially ruled unnatural deaths. Using unweighted national mortality rates, the conservative probability is E-27 (1 in a trillion trillion). Using JFK-weighted mortality rates, the probability is E-62 (1 in a trillion^5).

Calculation of estimated JFK-related homicides
Approximately 214 total deaths were expected based on average mortality among the estimated JFK 1400 witness universe in the 15 year period from 1964-78. Of this total, 197 natural deaths (103 heart attacks, 42 cancers and 52 other illnesses) were expected and 17 were expected unnatural (2 homicides, 12 accidents, 3 suicides).

Subtracting the 15 expected unnatural deaths (12 accidents+3 suicides) from the 40 ruled accidents and suicides, the remaining 25 must be homicides. Adding 25 to the 34 ruled homicides, approximately 59 of the 122 suspicious deaths were homicides. But this does not include suspicious heart attacks and sudden cancers which may have been homicides.

We determine a reasonable estimate of 63 actual homicides among the 78 ruled unnatural by simple arithmetic. Subtracting the expected number of accidental deaths and suicides from the 78 ruled unnatural: 63 Homicides = 78- 12- 3. But what about the 44 deaths ruled as natural?

The 44 natural deaths include 25 heart attacks and 19 from other causes. Unlike the documented deaths in JFK Calc, we don’t know how many of the 1400+ witnesses died from heart attacks, cancers and other causes But we do know the expected numbers: 103 heart attacks, 42 cancer and 52 other.

Let’s now estimate the number of natural deaths among the 122 suspicious deaths. Applying the (122/1400) ratio, there were an estimated 9 heart attacks, 3 cancers and 4 other illnesses so approximately 91 were homicides.

Sensitivity Analysis

For example, the conservative probability of 34 official homicides in the group of 1,400 witnesses is 1.57E-31 (less than 1 in a trillion trillion). The probability is 4.97E-07 (less than 1 in a million) assuming 10,000 witnesses.

Warren Commission apologists claim that the number of witnesses is unknowable. This is false by definition since approximately 1100 witnesses were called to testify in four investigations. Sixty-seven (67) are listed in JFK Calc. And the 59 who were not called are obviously very relevant.
